PIHBA was created to honor books that inspire hope, encourage healing, strengthen faith, promote resilience, and positively influence readers around the world. However, an inspiring story alone is not the only factor considered during the evaluation process.

Every submitted book is reviewed with care and respect. Our evaluators consider both the heart of the story and the quality of the author’s literary work. We examine how effectively the book has been written, organized, edited, presented, and communicated to its intended audience.

Our goal is not to criticize an author’s voice or compare one person’s life journey to another. Our goal is to recognize books that demonstrate meaningful impact, strong storytelling, professional presentation, and a high level of literary commitment.

Introducing the PIHBA Literary Excellence Rating System

As part of our continued commitment to credibility, transparency, and professional growth, PIHBA will now use a structured scoring system when reviewing submitted books.

Each book will be evaluated according to clearly defined literary and inspirational criteria. This allows our judges and reviewers to consider every entry consistently while still respecting the individuality of each author, genre, writing style, and cultural background.

The scoring system will help PIHBA:

• Maintain clear and professional judging standards.

• Provide greater consistency across all book categories.

• Recognize both inspirational impact and literary quality.

• Identify books that demonstrate exceptional excellence.

• Strengthen the credibility and integrity of every PIHBA recognition.

• Encourage authors to continue developing their writing and publishing standards.

A book does not need to be written in an overly complicated or academic style to receive a strong score. Clear, sincere, accessible writing can be extremely powerful. We are looking for books that successfully communicate their message to their intended readers.

What PIHBA Evaluates

1. Inspirational Impact and Message of Hope

We evaluate the strength, clarity, and authenticity of the book’s central message.

We consider whether the book:

• Inspires hope, courage, faith, healing, compassion, or positive change.

• Leaves the reader encouraged, strengthened, or emotionally moved.

• Offers meaningful insight, wisdom, or a renewed perspective.

• Demonstrates how pain, adversity, faith, purpose, or personal experience can positively influence others.

• Aligns with the values and mission of the award category entered.

A book’s message should feel genuine rather than forced. The strongest entries allow hope to rise naturally through the story, lessons, characters, testimony, or subject matter.

2. Quality of Writing

We examine how effectively the author communicates ideas, emotions, events, and experiences.

This includes:

• Sentence structure.

• Clarity of expression.

• Word choice.

• Readability.

• Consistency of tone.

• Effective use of description.

• Strength of dialogue, where applicable.

• The author’s ability to maintain the reader’s interest.

The writing should be appropriate for the book’s genre and intended audience. A children’s book, memoir, novel, devotional, poetry collection, and self-help book will each be evaluated according to the expectations of that particular form.

3. Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

Professional editing contributes greatly to a reader’s experience and to the overall credibility of a published book.

We consider:

• Grammar.

• Spelling.

• Punctuation.

• Capitalization.

• Proper sentence construction.

• Verb tense consistency.

• Paragraph structure.

• Typographical accuracy.

Minor errors may appear in almost any published work and will not automatically disqualify a book. However, repeated errors that distract the reader, interrupt the meaning, or make the book difficult to follow may affect the final score.

PIHBA also respects international authors and recognizes that English may not be every author’s first language. Books are evaluated with fairness and cultural sensitivity. The focus is on whether the writing is understandable, thoughtfully prepared, and professionally presented.

4. Structure, Organization, and Flow

We examine how well the book is organized from beginning to end.

Depending on the genre, we consider:

• The strength of the opening.

• Logical chapter order.

• Smooth transitions.

• Pacing.

• Development of ideas or events.

• Consistency throughout the book.

• The effectiveness of the conclusion.

• Whether the book remains focused on its main purpose.

A well-structured book helps the reader remain engaged and understand the author’s message. Even a deeply emotional or nonlinear story should provide enough direction for the reader to follow the journey.

5. Storytelling and Emotional Connection

For memoirs, autobiographies, fiction, children’s books, poetry, and narrative nonfiction, we evaluate the author’s ability to create a meaningful connection with the reader.

This may include:

• Emotional authenticity.

• Strength of character development.

• Vividness of scenes and experiences.

• Effective use of personal reflection.

• Believable dialogue.

• Memorable moments.

• The ability to make the reader care about the people, events, or message.

Powerful storytelling does not require exaggerated language. Honesty, vulnerability, originality, and emotional truth often create the greatest impact.

6. Originality and Authorial Voice

Every author has a unique voice, and PIHBA values originality.

We evaluate whether the book:

• Offers a distinct perspective.

• Reflects the author’s genuine voice.

• Presents familiar subjects in a meaningful or memorable way.

• Avoids unnecessary repetition or imitation.

• Demonstrates creativity, courage, or fresh insight.

• Feels personal, intentional, and authentic.

The author’s voice should remain consistent and appropriate for the subject matter. We do not expect every book to sound the same. Literary excellence includes the ability to remain true to one’s own voice while communicating effectively.

7. Depth, Purpose, and Substance

We consider whether the book provides meaningful value beyond its surface message.

This may include:

• Insightful reflection.

• Well-developed themes.

• Practical lessons.

• Spiritual or emotional depth.

• Thought-provoking ideas.

• Relevant research or supporting information.

• A clear sense of purpose.

For nonfiction, self-help, educational, or faith-based books, we also consider whether the guidance is clearly explained and meaningfully connected to the author’s central message.

8. Genre and Audience Effectiveness

Each book is evaluated according to its genre, category, and intended readership.

We consider:

• Whether the content is appropriate for the target audience.

• Whether the writing style supports the genre.

• Whether the book fulfills the expectations created by its title, description, and category.

• Whether the author communicates effectively with the readers the book was created to serve.

A children’s book will not be judged by the same standards as an adult memoir. Poetry will not be evaluated in the same manner as a business or self-help book. Every entry will be considered within its proper literary context.

9. Editing and Professional Presentation

We examine the overall professionalism of the finished book.

This includes:

• Interior formatting.

• Chapter headings.

• Page layout.

• Font consistency.

• Spacing.

• Table of contents, where applicable.

• Copyright and publication information.

• Image quality.

• Illustration placement.

• Consistency in design.

The presentation should support the reading experience rather than distract from it. A book does not need an expensive design, but it should appear carefully prepared and suitable for publication.

10. Cover Design and Visual Relevance

Although the written content remains central to the evaluation, the cover is an important part of a book’s professional presentation.

We consider:

• Relevance to the story or subject.

• Readability of the title and author’s name.

• Visual balance.

• Image quality.

• Genre appropriateness.

• Emotional impact.

• Overall professionalism.

A strong cover should provide readers with an honest and compelling introduction to the book.

11. Reader Impact and Lasting Impression

After completing the book, evaluators consider the impression it leaves behind.

We ask:

• Is the message memorable?

• Does the book encourage reflection or action?

• Will readers continue thinking about the story or lessons?

• Does the book make a meaningful contribution to its genre?

• Is there a passage, character, experience, or message that remains with the reader?

• Does the book have the potential to inspire, comfort, educate, or transform others?

The strongest books often continue speaking to the reader long after the final page.

PIHBA Scoring Categories

Books may be scored using the following 100-point framework:

Inspirational Impact and Message of Hope — 20 Points

This measures the strength, authenticity, and lasting influence of the book’s inspirational message.

Quality of Writing and Readability — 15 Points

This considers clarity, sentence construction, word choice, tone, description, and overall effectiveness.

Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation — 10 Points

This evaluates technical accuracy and the level of editing demonstrated throughout the book.

Structure, Organization, and Flow — 10 Points

This measures pacing, chapter arrangement, transitions, development, and coherence.

Storytelling and Emotional Connection — 15 Points

This considers the author’s ability to engage readers emotionally and create memorable experiences, characters, or reflections.

Originality and Authorial Voice — 10 Points

This evaluates the uniqueness, authenticity, and consistency of the author’s voice and perspective.

Depth, Purpose, and Genre Effectiveness — 10 Points

This considers substance, insight, relevance, and how successfully the book serves its intended audience.

Professional Presentation and Cover Design — 5 Points

This evaluates formatting, visual quality, interior presentation, and cover relevance.

Lasting Reader Impact — 5 Points

This measures the overall impression and the book’s ability to remain meaningful after it has been read.

Total Possible Score: 100 Points

PIHBA Rating Levels

Books may receive an internal literary rating based on their overall score.

90–100 Points: Exceptional Literary Excellence

The book demonstrates outstanding inspirational impact, polished writing, strong structure, professional presentation, and a memorable reader experience.

80–89 Points: Distinguished Literary Achievement

The book demonstrates a high level of writing quality, purpose, emotional impact, and professional commitment, with only minor areas that could be strengthened.

70–79 Points: Commendable Literary Merit

The book communicates a valuable and inspiring message and demonstrates clear literary strengths, while showing some opportunities for additional editing, development, or refinement.

60–69 Points: Promising Inspirational Work

The book contains a meaningful message and notable potential but may require further attention to editing, structure, clarity, presentation, or development.

Below 60 Points: Further Development Recommended

The book may contain a valuable idea or important testimony but would benefit from significant revision, editing, restructuring, or professional preparation before receiving higher-level literary recognition.

How Award Decisions Are Made

The literary score is an important part of the evaluation process, but it is not the only consideration.

Final award decisions may also consider:

• The specific award category.

• The strength of the book’s message.

• The author’s intended purpose.

• The book’s relevance to the PIHBA mission.

• The emotional and inspirational impact on the evaluator.

• The quality of competing entries within the same judging period.

• The book’s overall contribution to readers and the literary community.

A high score does not automatically guarantee a specific award, and a lower score does not mean that an author’s story lacks value. The scoring system is designed to support a fair, consistent, and thoughtful evaluation process.

Respecting Different Voices and Experiences

PIHBA welcomes authors from different nations, cultures, backgrounds, faith traditions, educational experiences, and stages of their publishing journey.

We understand that literary expression can differ across cultures and languages. We also understand that some authors work with professional editors and publishing teams, while others independently write and publish their first book.

Every author deserves to be treated with dignity.

Our evaluators are expected to assess the work without discrimination or personal bias. Books are reviewed according to their content, quality, category, message, and professional presentation.

An author’s nationality, popularity, social media following, financial position, personal connections, or public status should not determine the literary score of the book.

The Meaning of a PIHBA Award

A PIHBA award represents more than participation.

It recognizes an author whose book has demonstrated meaningful strength in areas such as hope, storytelling, resilience, faith, healing, purpose, literary quality, emotional connection, and reader impact.

By implementing a structured literary rating system, PIHBA is strengthening the meaning behind every certificate, seal, trophy, finalist recognition, category award, and Author of the Year consideration.
